  • Overview

    The Vocational Rehabilitation Community Education Specialist provides technical assistance to school personnel.  The goal is to prepare students with disabilities to enter the workforce, and be connected to necessary supports in the community.


    1. Provide consultation, technical assistance, and training to school district personnel and CSE chairpersons on the criteria and referral process for State VR services, services available from Independent Living Centers, and post secondary employment opportunities available through other State agency systems.
    2. Facilitate informational sessions in schools on the VR referral process and other post school service and support options.
    3. Participate in all ACCES-VR directed professional development activities and meetings as outlined in the ACCES-VR contract/MOU.
    4. Work collaboratively with the RSE-TASC Transition Specialists to facilitate meetings with interagency community groups.
    5. Work collaboratively RSE-TASC Transition Specialists to gather and evaluate data from special education and VR programs to guide regional initiates.
    6. Provide consultative and technical assistance to schools on how to engage community providers to expand their employment experience programs for youth to meet local and regional needs.
    7. Track and report progress on work plan activities/deliverables and provide individual quarterly reports to the ACCES-VR District Offices
    8. Supply data and supporting documentation for contract expenditures for submission for budget reports to ACCES-VR central office
    9. Maintain online resources and directories to keep information current and available to all constituents.
    10. Assist with the completion of quarterly and annual reports.


    Master’s degree in Special Education, Vocational Rehabilitation, Psychology, School Psychology, Reading or Speech and Language


    Bachelor’s degree in Special Education, Psychology, School Psychology, Reading or Speech and Language and a Master’s degree in Education and a minimum five years of direct teaching or provision of services with, or providing training on, technical assistance relating to transition-age students with disabilities in schools and/or community service agencies.


    Additional Qualifications:

    • Knowledge in ACCES-VR supports, services and operational structure
    • Knowledge IDEA and the Rehabilitation  Act as related to transitional services
    • Demonstrated experiencing the provision of consultation, technical assistance and training
    • Valid NYS driver's license
    • Ability to travel extensively through Monroe and surrounding counties
    • Ability to work a schedule consistent with school district need
    • Certified Rehabilitation Counselor preferred
